Original Grand Etteilla Tarot deck created by the occultist Etteilla (Jean-Baptiste Alliette) the first professional tarot reader around 1791. The deck illustrations were created by the famous engraver Pierre-François Basan. This deck is historically important as it is the first to: use “Madness” and the number 0 for the Fool Arcana card. It is also the first to use astrological correspondences on the Major Arcana cards. Tarot correspondences will be further extended by other occultists such as Papus, Waite, Case and Crowley. Etteilla named this deck the "Le jeu de Thoth" and following Court de Gébelin traced its origin to ancien Egypt and the temple of Memphis.
This version is believed to be the first edition as it has all the typographical errors of the first version including some words not properly upside-down and astrological signs on only one-side as noted by Decker et al. It is also not a later re-print such as the Pussey one as it doesn’t have a tax stamp which were introduced in France around 1813. It is also not the deluxe version that is rumored to exist.
Our deck is complete, in very good condition but doesn’t have its box or manual.
